The Giants and 49ers both had to deal with some key injuries, but San Francisco’s superior depth made all the difference on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium. New York trailed by double digits for the entire second half, on their way to a 34-24 loss.
Big Blue got off to a good start, driving for a touchdown on its opening possession with Jaxson Dart finding tight end Theo Johnson from 15 yards out. However, the 49ers soon took control with 20 unanswered points, starting on their next possession that ended with a Mac Jones touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey.
Jones added another passing score to Jauan Jennings and two field goals from Eddy Pineiro extended the lead to 13 halfway through the third quarter. Big Blue answered with a field goal from Graham Gano, but the 49ers still led 20-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
With 11:35 remaining, Brian Robinson’s 18-yard touchdown run extended the 49ers’ lead to 27-10, but the Giants put together a scoring drive to cut their deficit to 27-17 with roughly eight minutes left. Dart finished off the drive himself, with a 6-yard keeper.
McCaffrey’s short touchdown run with 4:13 to go extinguished any remaining hopes of a Giants comeback, although Dart, who ended up with 191 passing yards, threw a late 24-yard touchdown pass to Gunner Olszewski to bring the final margin back to 10 points.
